Herb Lubalin


A lot of times I use the favorites tool on flickr to bookmark images for research later. I "bookmarked" the cover of an issue of Avant Garde about a year ago, and just now had a chance to gather some information on the details of what it is and who designed it.

Herbert Lubalin is new to me. Not his work, but his name. At an estate sale a few months ago I spent some time contemplating buying a hardcover copy of EROS, Autumn, 1962, Volume One, Number Three.


But what I really want to know more about is the image below. Like, what it was used for when it was done, etc.

  1. Herb Lubalin designed the Avant Garde masthead, and the font derived from the masthead. The cover art is by pop artist Tom Wesselman, whose work is featured in that issue.
